10:25] AJ Brooks: The EDUCAUSE Virtual Worlds group is open to anyone who is interested in the topic of virtual worlds (VWs) in Higher Education.

The purpose of this group is multi-faceted:
1) Developing best practices for effective pedagogy in VWs.
2) Discussing and exploring methodologies for research in and on VWs.
3) Exploring effective methods for assuring quality learning outcomes and assessment in VWs.
4) Investigating uses of VWs for non-academic purposes that improve the learning experience.

10:25] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: came up w/group charter

10:25] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: is reviewing the posted charter

10:29] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: good percentage for size group

10:29] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: for pple w/out avs in SL, why did you come to today's meeting?

10:29] Geo Meek: i hear you

10:30] Profdan Netizen: barely hear her. Is she coming through AJ?

10:30] Artemis Reina: barely hear

10:30] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: can you repeat what they are saying, or can they come to your mic to talk?

10:31] Frans Charming: /You can make Elani louder but pressing the text clouds button, next to the talk button. In there you can se Elani's name, and make her louder.

10:31] Mirt Tenk: yes much

10:31] Kev Juno: can you turn up mik gain?

10:31] Mirt Tenk: Elani: Elaine has an av, started in SL, found it frustrating & gave up but feels it has tremendous potential

10:31] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: that is a common response

10:31] Geo Meek: most people quit because there is no heap

10:32] Geo Meek: =help

10:32] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: many ppl see possibilities but get frustrated due to tech, equipment problems, or simply b/c network unavailable (pple network)

10:32] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: were any of these the reasons for your frustration?

10:32] Mirt Tenk: she said it's due to up to speed time

10:32] Mirt Tenk: steep but short learning curve (Mirt)

10:32] Geo Meek: life is vary slow most of the time

10:32] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: a common reaction

10:33] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: companies like NMC, ISTE, Virtual Ability have put in specialized "first hour" experiences

10:33] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: when I came in, everyone came into same main orientation island

10:33] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: now changed and is horrible

10:33] Oronoque Westland: it's like Times Square

10:33] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: then other companies began providing first hour experiences which are more positive

10:34] Geo Meek: voice speeds things up if it works

10:34] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: very common experience is too hard for the benefits
10:34] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: what about from people here @ the table in SL?

10:34] Geo Meek: i do

10:34] Mirt Tenk: yes

10:34] Toi Kohime: yes

10:34] Artemis Reina: yes

10:34] Zotarah Shepherd: yes

10:34] Bevan Whitfield: yes

10:34] Frans Charming: yes

10:34] Franchella Milena: yes

10:34] Kennesaw Landar: yes

10:34] Kev Juno: assisted teachers

10:34] Zage Farman: tes

10:34] Steve Appalachia: yes

10:34] Shawnta's Free Translator: Too many HTTP requests too fast.

10:34] Turterelle Cuttita: i got good help

10:34] Profdan Netizen: scheduled to in fall.

10:34] Mirt Tenk: not academically, I teach faculty how to use SL in teaching

10:34] Geo Meek: text lag hehe

10:35] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: about half here have taught in SL

10:35] Geo Meek: if your in sl your teaching

10:35] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: when you taught, what was the biggest challenge?

10:35] Geo Meek: voice

10:35] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: in teaching?

10:35] Turterelle Cuttita: voice

10:35] Kev Juno: Helping newbie students move around

10:35] Artemis Reina: Teaching the students to move

10:35] Turterelle Cuttita: teaching Spanish

10:35] Mirt Tenk: teaching in RL vs only in world

10:35] Geo Meek: i teach people use voice

10:35] Kennesaw Landar: customizing curriculum to variable tech gear levels of students

10:36] Geo Meek: =how

10:36] Mirt Tenk: they learn faster if we DON'T meet in RL while in SL

10:36] Artemis Reina: we taught only modules in SL

10:36] Artemis Reina: Nursing program

10:36] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: we got good support from our univ

10:36] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: got SL on pub lab machines

10:36] Artemis Reina: Yes we have labs as well equipped with SL in the Nursing Dept

10:36] Kennesaw Landar: cannot

10:36] Margaret Michalski: My institution declined the request

10:36] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: if students' computers won't run SL, probs requiring using SL for assignments

10:36] Profdan Netizen: We're noting requirements in schedule book for the SL section.

10:36] Margaret Michalski: yes

10:37] Mirt Tenk has SL on all pub lab machines on campus

10:37] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: a lot of people don't want to allocate the bandwidth

10:37] Kennesaw Landar: encouraging faculty to use as "parallel" option in assignments

10:37] Geo Meek: UNCG has a sim and no one uses it

10:37] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: our univ manages network resources & allocates SL into a separate channel (probably a separate port)

10:37] Kennesaw Landar: can my tech guys talk to your guys:)

10:37] Artemis Reina: Quality of service on network is a must

10:37] Kennesaw Landar: thank you

10:38] Toi Kohime: participants/students were a little afraid of the concept, and wondered about security or privacy issues

10:38] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: yes, I'll connect your tech guys w/mine

10:38] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: we have good buy-in from our univ

10:38] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: someone earlier said has an island and nobody comes to it

10:38] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: we started w/faculty support

10:38] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: saw potential immediately

10:38] Geo Meek: there are many unused sims

10:38] Kev Juno: We filter net traffic based on protocols. Had to work with them to enable some web conferencing systems, second life, etc. adjusted so they get full bandwidth again.

10:38] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: asked univ to do pilot, they agreed if he could get 3-4 faculty to support him for one year

10:39] Kennesaw Landar: agree

10:39] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: don't know if they're unused sims or just classrooms

10:39] Frans Charming: /exactly

10:39] Geo Meek: crack your map and have a look

10:39] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: w/our islands, you might think ours are relatively unused (except this one, b/c we have the edu community here)

10:39] Artemis Reina: We look at the sims like classrooms as well--when there are classes and events that is the use

10:39] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: it's event-oriented. There may be nothing going on on one island right now

10:40] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: another island may have an event going on and be busy

10:40] Geo Meek: yes

10:40] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: probably we would see if universities shared spaces, more concentrated use of island space

10:40] Kennesaw Landar: upswing will come when vw spaces are used for social networking by students a few years of

10:40] Artemis Reina: Do you see that within any university settings?

10:40] Steve Appalachia: how does teaching relate to creating a broader sense of community? Does that change use and function of "educational" spaces?

10:40] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: in this economy, more are sharing now

10:40] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: unlike space on actual RL campus, it's pretty cheap to keep space in SL

10:41] Geo Meek: one day a week

10:41] Geo Meek: :-)

10:41] Oronoque Westland: there are a few of us here who would volunteer to be gifted a SIM, right Zo

10:41] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: less costly to let an island sit empty a lot of time

10:41] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: when it is being used, it's being used well for that time.

10:41] Zotarah Shepherd: yes

10:41] Geo Meek: that well change

10:41] Kennesaw Landar: dollar per dollar is almost free compared to cost per dau to maintain a rl classroom

10:41] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: one day a week might not be most efficient

10:41] Isabetta Capalini: one of the problems I have encountered is that much of the teaching that I have seen

10:41] Margaret Michalski: it is a start

10:41] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: don't buy into "build it and they will come"

10:41] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: anyone in Providence have anything to ask?

10:41] Geo Meek: :-)

10:41] Mirt Tenk: yes,

10:42] Geo Meek: Hello Elann

10:42] Frans Charming nods

10:42] Mirt Tenk: Elaine: big problem I've found, much of the instruction I've noticed is lecturing w/avatars or two avs, wanted something more interactive, student-centered, interactive in nature

10:42] Kev Juno: Using the tool for what it's best for

10:42] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: good point Elaine

10:43] Mirt Tenk: SL is best used in ways not easily replicated in RL

10:43] Mirt Tenk: for edu

10:43] Isabetta Capalini: Mirk, yes I totally agree

10:43] Isabetta Capalini: so it requires new thinking altogether

10:43] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: problem w/teaching tools is that people find a new tool, want to make it fit the current course

10:43] Geo Meek: i do a video of lectures for The London School of Journalism and post to U-Tube

10:43] Kev Juno: I am interested in things like simulated environments, like PADI diving sim that actually simulates diving equipment realistically.

10:44] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: when we made our first main island, I divided it inhalf

10:44] Mirt Tenk: left one half blank for faculty members

10:44] Mirt Tenk: built up the other half

10:44] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: got ppl to come in & grow on their own

10:44] Artemis Reina: We used SL for interviewing avatars with a specific health history for our nursing students. For standardized patient interviews for nutritional health assessments. It was very effective.

10:44] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: originally refused to build anything like a classroom or university in RL

10:44] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: first endeavor was Edgar Allen Poe house

10:45] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: designed to look like House of Usher

10:45] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: instructors could send students to class any time

10:45] Frans Charming: / :)

10:45] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: could see heart beating beneath the floor, raven, etc,

10:45] Kennesaw Landar: yes Kennesaw State requested some replica builds and not only do faculty want all the same tools as rl they expect it to be a complete replica . . . replica may be good for recruitment presentation but it actually is a barrier

10:45] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: determine goal, try to accomplish w/different tools

10:46] Zotarah Shepherd: Interactive instructional builds and collaborative building is a great way to teach in SL.

10:46] IM: Shawnta Clarence: Good idea i will ask him

10:47] Mirt Tenk: Brandon Hancock: use of SL for experiences not easy in RL, serves as a fundraiser for performing arts org

10:47] Mirt Tenk: use SL to recreate the performing arts center

10:47] Mirt Tenk: provide someone ability to walk around in a simulated space

10:47] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: there are several architecture firms w/closed islands which build 3D replicas of planned constructions

10:48] Kev Juno: Advanced simulations like that are great, exactly what we need, but it also requires technical staff to assist faculty in setting it up.

10:48] Frans Charming nods

10:48] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: about a build we're doing, our middle school library project is relevant

10:48] Oronoque Westland: wonderful performances

10:48] Bevan Whitfield: http://slshakespeare.com/

10:48] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: they've recreated the Globe theater & have avs which perform Shakespeare AND non-Shakespeare works there

10:49] Kennesaw Landar: yes the proportions need to be put thru a formula to adjust the build

10:49] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: most avs would be about 7 feet tall in SL (Except MIrt Tenk)

10:49] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: b/c of this you need wider & taller hallways

10:50] Frans Charming: /and above the head.

10:50] Mirt Tenk: you can adjust the camera angle however

10:50] PolkaDot Pechmann: It is an odd feeling.

10:51] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: working on a language facility, thought about creating the facility here in SL

10:51] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: project didn't get funded

10:53] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: ppl in edu are pretty smart in general

10:53] Profdan Netizen: I'm all for innovative educational uses of SL, or other MUVEs, but I also see value in using MUVEs to create an immersive online environments forsimpler educational uses, such as discussion, presentation, sharing of work--much better than 2D LMS, esp if you can use in world use of 2D web.

10:53] Geo Meek: schools have much to learn

10:54] Geo Meek: talk

10:54] AJ Brooks: MIrt - as far as building a model, great idea

10:54] AJ Brooks: mirt - be aware - if you are going to build a model, don't ahve to build the whole thing to scale

10:54] AJ Brooks: mirt - can build components, etc....

10:55] AJ Brooks: mirt - also need to be aware of, most won't learn to use SL to experience the model

10:55] AJ Brooks: mirt - be prepared to do the demo yourself

10:55] Geo Meek: the problam with people is having them on the same page

10:57] Mirt Tenk: I wouldn't turn a group of students loose in SL to build w/pr;ims

10:57] Geo Meek: thy dont have to build

10:57] Mirt Tenk: it is not what I want them to be concentrating on as a language instructor

10:57] Kennesaw Landar: could be both

10:57] Mirt Tenk: are you creating students capable of work in SL but not learning the material?

10:58] Geo Meek: mombojumbo

10:58] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: in graduate class, Middle School project--students aren't creating the materials for the library

10:58] Geo Meek: teach them to use the interface

10:58] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: trained them to use their inventory & how to use stuff in their inventory

10:58] Margaret Michalski: how about opening doors etc.

10:58] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: each indiv course will differ depending on pedagogical application

10:59] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: we're building a language learning facility here, but students will operate w/in the environment

10:59] Kennesaw Landar: opening doors = opening files

10:59] Geo Meek: Language Lab is doing that now

10:59] Mirt Tenk: AJ Brooks: more questions from Providence?
