Teri Emerald: Emerald Teri

AJ Brooks: Exosius Mistwalker

Mirt Tenk: @ Valencia Community College

Mirt Tenk: ty AJ

Eurominuteman Jameson: Eurominuteman Jameson

Zotarah Shepherd: Wow 59 people here.

MLani Montgomery: I'm starting a class through Boise State next week all about teaching in virtual worlds. I'm starting--as a student.

Frankie Antonelli: Frankie Antonelli

Mirt Tenk: Exosius said he took a field trip in SL similar to the environmental area studied

Mirt Tenk: CHichen Itza

Uskala Hidayat: Taught the use of machinima for an MBA class in global innovation.

AJ Brooks: chichen itza is cool

JoannaTrail Blazer: neat :)

Mirt Tenk: AJ said The Theorist Project is a good example

Mirt Tenk: AJ said on the far side of our three islands, part of the college of Education & Human Services

Mirt Tenk: AJ said this was a cooperative project over a year

toster Oh: The Theorist Project is the best educational build I've yet seen in SL.

Mirt Tenk: AJ said they build a replica of Freud's office

Jackie Rexen: The Psychology leaning theorists project is a perfect example of using SL to bridge theory into practice using SL

Mirt Tenk: AJ said not it has a FreudBot in it w/a Freud Iceberg to demo various levels of consciousness

Exosius Mistwalker: Hi, everyone!

Jackie Rexen: Adler is actually one of my favorite areas there

hobbs Constantine: It's fun, if a little chilly.

Bill Friis: Howdy, Exosius!

Mirt Tenk: AJ said let's start on today's topic

Mirt Tenk: AJ said when he & Paula talked about the theme for the meeting, they wanted to keep w/the Educause conf theme, Changing face of the classroom of the future

Exosius Mistwalker: I recommend "Virtual Hallucinations" it is a schizophrenia simulator. Designed for the mental health fields.

Bill Friis: People like the ivory tower.

Mirt Tenk: AJ said it's fairly clear we've had people saying many technology tools would change edu: TV, Cassette tapes, VCR, Videoconferencing

Jackie Rexen: K-12 now is the interactive whiteboard

MLani Montgomery: It took over 30 years for the overhead projector to move from the bowling alley into the classroom. Resistance is futile.

Mirt Tenk: each one has been predicted to bring major change to higher education

Doomsday Sorbet: meanwhile... some people can't get a handle on email...

Exosius Mistwalker: LOL Mlani

Mirt Tenk: AJ said my question is, WILL this change everything, or is it another tool in the educator's toolchest?

Margaret Michalski: if anyone is having trouble please let me know.

Jackie Rexen: All of the above

Bill Friis: You can have change without changing everything.

Mirt Tenk: AJ said this topic drew people to the RL Educause conference, so does anyone in Atlanta have any comments on this?

MLani Montgomery raises her hand

Roshana Rives: VH think of that as a way to experience from anothers perspective perceptually, emotionally , cognitively

Mirt Tenk: Lizzy SaintLouis said we're using it in conjunction w/other things, not as a standalone

Mirt Tenk: AJ said what about others here? Do you think VWs will be mandatory like a CMS?

JoannaTrail Blazer: see how the people in first life are shy... i had a lot of great results with my shy students coming out of their shell in SL classes

Exosius Mistwalker: Yes!

Margaret Michalski: I think it has to be combination

Katie Fenstalker: will they be integrated?

Margaret Michalski: activities in virtual

Doomsday Sorbet: they will merge... change happens while we're not paying attention, it seems...

Mirt Tenk: MLanie Montgomery recommended May Issue of Learning & Leading w/Technology (?)

Margaret Michalski: discussion in virtual

AJ Brooks: folks here in SL - please feel free to use voice chat

Jackie Rexen: Some form of virtual environments will be the model for distance education - and distance education is a future trend

Eurominuteman Jameson: title red James

Roshana Rives: LMS moodle and sloodle

Margaret Michalski: a wiki can be used in BB or other course management sites

Grinn Pidgeon: @Jackie agreed

Katie Fenstalker: I admit I prefer SL to our ELMS.

Bev Landar: moving toward Web 3D.... access internet through avatars.... coming soon.

Mirt Tenk: MLani Montgomery said if you are willing to embrace technology change & social environments which foster learning, then teachers need to find multiple ways to incorporate these into their teaching so students will be ready for what is already happening in the business world

Jackie Rexen: Thanks Grinn

hobbs Constantine: high five MLani

MLani Montgomery: high five, hobbs

Jackie Rexen: Here is the ISTE publication http://www.iste.org/Content/NavigationMenu/Publications/LL/Current_Issue/L_L_May.htm

Topher Zwiers: I think the two will integrate, but I think it will be some time before Virtual Worlds take a place in education as significant as LMS's. I believe virtual worlds serve as a tool, but I don't see distance learning revolving around them like it does currently with LMS'

Mirt Tenk: ty Jackie

Jackie Rexen: NP

MLani Montgomery: virtual worlds and collaborative environments are not limited to distance courses.

Thursday Xu: Yes Mlani - social presence and collaboration in knowledge creation sets vritual worlds apart from conventional LMS

Uskala Hidayat: Yes

MLani Montgomery: yes

AJ Brooks: YES

Heidi TeeCee: yes

Exosius Mistwalker: Yes

JoannaTrail Blazer: YES

mOOn Jaecies: yes

Bill Friis: Yes-ish

Roshana Rives: yes

Lizzy Saintlouis: 2 of us

Mirt Tenk: took a graduate course

Astra Martian: yes

Hopalong Oh: Yes - classes

Heidi TeeCee: yes

Uskala Hidayat: Yes

Lizzy Saintlouis: one did assessment

MLani Montgomery: yes

JoannaTrail Blazer: It was part of it

Mirt Tenk: Lizzy said someone in Atlanta wanted to know about assessment in SL

Heidi TeeCee: no ... and I am multitasking

Mirt Tenk: There is an assessment EDU group in SL

Exosius Mistwalker: I did, for a class FOR faculty - I'm an instructional designer

Heidi TeeCee: its ok ... I'm here but there are others around

Mirt Tenk: Group name is The Assessment Group

Roshana Rives: Looking at developing protocols for immersive environments Do folks learn from them

Mirt Tenk: AJ said, we need to determine how we assess the nonverbal experience?

Jackie Rexen: Need to examine the transfer of learning from VW to Real Life too

Mirt Tenk: AJ said do we assess how students learn w/other tools?

Heidi TeeCee: not LMS but other special technology tools we do assess

Roshana Rives: Started with Wired Island and some of the builds there

Eliasdehart Sixpence: This is my dissertation idea: using communications model and persuasion/attitude change to assess impact of learning tools and approaches on students.

Mirt Tenk: AJ said if not, why are we looking to assess the VW environment?

Mirt Tenk: AJ said for courses using technology, universities are using the same assessment tool they use for the non-virtual environment

Roshana Rives: Agree AJ

Bev Landar: agreed.... environment is radically different

Mirt Tenk: AJ said we need to adjust the assessment tools so it will match the experience

Mirt Tenk: AJ said yes, we have done assessment, and we're aobut to do an internal report o it

Heidi TeeCee: If we have a class in SL we do change the assessment so it matches the "technology" ...

Mirt Tenk: AJ said we found that when SL is used as an appropriate tool for the course, when the pedagogy is enhanced by the technology, the results have been overwhelmingly positive

Mirt Tenk: AJ said students felt they were more engaged

Austen Scanlan: Wow educators love pedagogy(sp)? What does it mean for non-educators?

Uskala Hidayat: Ironically, the students report having more of a "real" experience.

Eurominuteman Jameson: how about implementing ISO 9001 Quality Management and use this approach as systems boundary line

Exosius Mistwalker: Yes, similar results for our Mythology course.

Viv Trafalgar: :)

JoannaTrail Blazer: haha

Uskala Hidayat: lol

Mirt Tenk: I asked how AJ defines appropriate use of the technology

Mirt Tenk: AJ said he doesn't think there is any rubric but is looking at this as pat of his dissertation

Mirt Tenk: AJ said there is no one-size fits all kind of thing

JoannaTrail Blazer: I think the key is augmenting the classroom rather than duplicating (except in distance learning, it might be the only classroom)

Bev Landar: thus, the nature of complexity.... one size does not fit all

Mirt Tenk: AJ said recently on the SLED list someone asked how long someone should be in SL before they teach?

Austen Scanlan: Interested to learn "how" technology affects imagination?

Mirt Tenk: AJ said the faculty member should know more about the tool than their students do

Jackie Rexen: It can't be one size fits all if educators come from a foundation of student centered learning - so the faculty needs to know the tool and the students - true ethnolographers

Mirt Tenk: AJ said faculty or a support person should know more

Roshana Rives: have to experience this as a lived space

Mirt Tenk: AJ said I don't have an easy answer to that question

Bev Landar: concern about Open Standards affecting society and culture in a dynamic feedback loop

Austen Scanlan: I'd look at gaming and extrapolate?

Mirt Tenk: AJ said the faculty member needs to find the instructional designer on campus & ask for their help

Eurominuteman Jameson: i used ISO 9001 for this http://avalon-project.ning.com/group/virtuallearninggivingnewbiesagoodfirstexperience

Birdie Newcomb: A second facilitator would make a big difference

Jackie Rexen: Studying the history of movies!

Mirt Tenk: in determining if SL is the best tool

Mirt Tenk: AJ said as a tool, it needs to enhance the learning process. At the end of the cass, ask if the learning objective was accomplished through use of the tool

Eurominuteman Jameson: i discovered that hybrid teaching fits in

Mirt Tenk: Question from ATlanta: would an ID know how to design a course using SL?

Mirt Tenk: AJ said no

Doomsday Sorbet: no... wouldn't think that...

Margaret Michalski: It depends if they know SL

Zotarah Shepherd: Sage-on-the-stage teaching is not really the best use of teaching in SL.

Mirt Tenk: AJ said that may be true for many tools I have to use

Margaret Michalski: Nobody on my campus does

Cahona Baxton: Check out "moodle" and "sloodle" http://web.me.com/dlaks/FSO_Blog/LMO/Entries/2009/5/3_Future_Trends.html for assessment and learring tools

JoannaTrail Blazer: "guide on the side" Zotarah, says Intellagirl hehe

Mirt Tenk: AJ said do we have IDs here who could answer?

Eurominuteman Jameson: who knows more about hybrid teaching

Eleonora Porta: I think that integration between web resources and LMS with SL and openSim and VW coul play a very useful role in th future...and now. I'm hoping!

Mirt Tenk: AJ said the faculty member needs to have some breadth & depth of hte knowledge so they can tell the ID how they wnat to use it and the ID can ask questions taht deal with pedagogy

Zotarah Shepherd: Immersive, interactive, problem based or constructionist pedagogy works better.

Heidi TeeCee: Yes, it depends but they would have the background to assess if it is a good fit ... it is just like any other technology

Praxislady Witt: ISD methodology can easily be transformed in the SL environment, so the answer is really yes?

MLani Montgomery: And the learning objectives

Mirt Tenk: more than w/an specific tool

Uskala Hidayat: Yes, Sarah Robbins aka Intelligirl says instructors need to get beyond "sage on a stage"

Mirt Tenk is an instructional technologist supporting faculty @ Clemson

Mirt Tenk: AJ said part of their role is to help clarify for the faculty member

Cahona Baxton: Join SL Group for Educators in Facebook for info, notices etc.

Uskala Hidayat: We've had educational design students study MBA classes using SL to create machinimas.

Eurominuteman Jameson: how about a hybrid approach

Exosius Mistwalker: I agree, SL is just another tool. A cool one, but, it does not change pedagogical or general learning needs

Praxislady Witt: Agree!

Eleonora Porta: collaborative and cooperative learning could have a great impulse for pedagogical objective

Exosius Mistwalker: I never ever use absolutes. they are always bad.

Eurominuteman Jameson: who assesses a hybrid approach

Mirt Tenk: lol

Roshana Rives: Yes Eleonora

Mirt Tenk: I"ll mention it to her

Mirt Tenk: AJ said any more questions from Atlanta?

MLani Montgomery: ISTE has already created Ed Tech standards for students and teachers, and are working on standards for administrators.

Mirt Tenk: gentleman in Atlanta is part of a tenure & promotion committee. Has this area in SL developed into the same category as the credit we give to publications in journals, etc?

Eurominuteman Jameson: ISO 9001 assessment http://avalon-project.ning.com/group/virtuallearninggivingnewbiesagoodfirstexperience

Uskala Hidayat: Sometimes the students can bring expertise the instructor lacks. French students, for example, had very sophisticated cinema ideas that really enriched a recent machinima project.

Mirt Tenk: had a faculty member who sent a list of blogs he was publishing as part of criteria for tenure

JoannaTrail Blazer: :)

Austen Scanlan: I'd rank it extremely high.

JoannaTrail Blazer: Yes there are, ~has a look~

Mirt Tenk: AJ said if those here can come up w/the names of journals in which those working in SL cna publish, please share in text chat

Mirt Tenk: AJ said you can email him sorry.aft@gmail.com

Jackie Rexen: http://www.jvwresearch.org/

Exosius Mistwalker: http://ictlibrary.googlepages.com/

Mirt Tenk: oops sorry.afk@gmail.com

Margaret Michalski: Journal of Medical Internet Research covers medical area

Mirt Tenk: AJ said there is a broad & growing body of good academic research being done on and about and within VWs

JoannaTrail Blazer: Here is a list!!

JoannaTrail Blazer: http://www.eduisland.net/salamanderwiki/index.php?title=Peer-Reviewed_Journals

Mirt Tenk: AJ said THANK YOU for looking closely at how faculty are incorporating technology into the teaching process

Exosius Mistwalker: http://sleducation.wikispaces.com/

Mirt Tenk: many universities don't take this into consideration, and that restricts peoples' use of technology when pursuing tenure

Grinn Pidgeon: and there has been accepted research in gaming for a long time; in some cases there are journals on gaming and virtual worlds

Mirt Tenk: AJ said email me after this meeting & I'll get you a better list

Mirt Tenk: AJ said there are several listservs looking at this

Katie Fenstalker: AJ could you put up a note on this for the facebook grp?

Mirt Tenk: AJ said he wishes more universities recognized the value of taking technology usage into tenure evaluation

Mirt Tenk: From Atlanta: how do you encourage faculty to even look at SL

Mirt Tenk: ?

Uskala Hidayat: Write grants and get money

Eurominuteman Jameson: hybrid approaches

Margaret Michalski: I give a tour of locations related to area.

MLani Montgomery: Excellent idea--a case study in their discipline

Mirt Tenk: Joanna TrailBlazer said the edu community in SL has grown substantially in the past 2-3 years

Mirt Tenk: there are many machinima videos out there showing an application of SL in their field

Heidi TeeCee: You can also schedule a special workshop to get them started.

JoannaTrail Blazer: Yes, a little show and tell

Eurominuteman Jameson: check the video using a hybrid approach here http://avalon-project.ning.com/group/virtuallearninggivingnewbiesagoodfirstexperience

Mirt Tenk: AJ said he has put up a graphic RE research on VWs

Montclair State CHSSSouth Free Land Initiative - Faire:

Grinn Pidgeon: we have a faculty colloquium day where faculty give sessions as in a conference, and we did two on SL that got a lot of interest

Jackie Rexen: My department chairs from the Teacher Education department of the ____ University when I mentioned SL said "Jackie, we are still trying to figure out Twitter and you want us to consider Second Life?!?"

Roshana Rives: use it first as a learning experience for yourself let your expereinces guide your what ifs and what nexts IMHO

Mirt Tenk: AJ said touch the object 6to get a copy of the graphic

JoannaTrail Blazer: (@ still trying to figure out twitter comment) It is all Social Media...try to show them that

JoannaTrail Blazer: :)

Mirt Tenk: the red balls represent active VWs size indicates # users

Uskala Hidayat: Remember Clay Sharkey caveat about "registered users"

Jackie Rexen: I do Joanna!

Mirt Tenk: AJ said more people will be coming in who are already in VWs and will bring it to their teaching

Austen Scanlan: Use the gamer stats; it's really the most convincing argument.

Praxislady Witt: Is there a different approach to SL Learning within the two in-worlds> Teen and Adult?

Mirt Tenk: AJ said unless someone knows why it should be used, how doesn't matter

Margaret Michalski: I found that giving tours is more effective than just giving links

Mirt Tenk: AJ said you have to show them why it is important to them

Margaret Michalski: you can answer immediate answers based on their reaction.

Eurominuteman Jameson: ISO 9001 includes the WHY

Mirt Tenk: AJ said when you get three or four working together they will help

Mirt Tenk: Lizzy SaintLouis has set of LMs for their discipline

Mirt Tenk: they can explore their area

Jackie Rexen: Sadly - for many administrators - it is also about cost-effectivenees - Need to show how VWs are cost effective for learning - Any research in that area?

Praxislady Witt: Like a web-quest?

Mirt Tenk: AJ said he has a notecard he gives called "Places to see" in SL

Mirt Tenk: AJ said it starts w/orientation & fun areas

Mirt Tenk: AJ said some are educational like the Ohio Univ or Princeton builds

JoannaTrail Blazer: Princeton at Alexander beach sim is amazing architecture

Zotarah Shepherd: Getting people to create an SL account is the hard part.

Cahona Baxton: Check out Penn State's 8 islands in SL

AJ Brooks: If you are having problems with voice - please check the HELP sign on the back wall or IM Margaret Michalski for assistance

Cahona Baxton: SUNY - State University of New York great uses of SL in ed

AJ Brooks: JoannaTrail Blazer: list of 10 here

JoannaTrail Blazer: http://www.eduisland.net/salamanderwiki/index.php?title=Peer-Reviewed_Journals

JoannaTrail Blazer: not to forget educause quarterly

Eleonora Porta: agree Zothara

Jackie Rexen: The every other Sunday ISTE Tour to different sites - many with an educational piece is what hooked me into SL.

Grinn Pidgeon: BGSU Bowling Green State University is another good build

Bill Friis: Dare to be stupid.

Jackie Rexen: Sloode is the closest

Mirt Tenk: Question from Atlanta: has anyone built any of these into building blocks w/Blackboard

Mirt Tenk: Someone in Atlanta said he's building something now

Mirt Tenk: LSL will talk to http & xml files

Austen Scanlan: Call it now teacher left behind. And tell them it will be on the test!

Austen Scanlan: opps "NO"

Mirt Tenk: lost audio on most of what he said

Mirt Tenk: AJ said Blackboard had put out a competition to try to develop something

Mirt Tenk: Angel LMS was working on this

Bill Friis: How about Desire2Learn?

Birdie Newcomb: will there be a blackboodle?

Mirt Tenk: Blackboard just bought them

AJ Brooks: `SLOODLE

Austen Scanlan: Blackboard is the worst and I'm not an educator.

Mirt Tenk: AJ said Moodle is deeply integrated w/the Sloodle tool

Mirt Tenk: there's a great deal of integration w/Moodle

Doomsday Sorbet: Blackboard also has the ability to work with moodle

Mirt Tenk: AJ said answer is "not yet but soon we hope" for Blackboard

Uskala Hidayat: Many universities are moving away from Blackboard and toward open source solutions like moodle.

hobbs Constantine: He said that Blackboard does have some scripting (HTML...) that will allow Bb to work with SL

Margaret Michalski: We had trouble implementing moodle

Doomsday Sorbet: I will find the info... not sure how good i is...

Mirt Tenk: ty hobbs

hobbs Constantine: :-)

Margaret Michalski: I am assuming nobody is having trouble.

Mirt Tenk: AJ said how about some of you in SL who haven't spoken up?

Lizzy Saintlouis: Blackboard new edition will be easier the Ver9

Mirt Tenk: anyone want to share anything?

Eurominuteman Jameson: i prefer text

Austen Scanlan: I'm speechless.

Oronoque Westland: Is the classroom of the future blended or fully online?

Mirt Tenk: Bev Lander asked if there is a listing of best practices in using SL, esp the un-real physics

Mirt Tenk: AJ said people keep trying to work on best practices but it's like herding cats

Mirt Tenk: AJ said there was a recent conf on best practices

AJ Brooks: simteach

Jackie Rexen: Best Practices in SL, I believe, would have to be discipline specific

Mirt Tenk: AJ said SimTeach is a wiki w/some best practices

JoannaTrail Blazer: Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education Conference http://www.vwbpe.org/

hobbs Constantine: SLOAN-C?

Bev Landar: Thank you. :)

Uskala Hidayat: ISTE

Eurominuteman Jameson: what about hybrid best practices?

Mirt Tenk: NMC?

Bev Landar: I attended the conference in SL. :)

Mirt Tenk: AJ said ISTE has a focus on K-12 but reaching more to higher ed

Birdie Newcomb: how much IT does one need to do blended classes?
